High in the karst country of western Bosnia, in the municipality of Bosansko Grahovo, lies Bastasi. It's a quiet village of stone, meadow and forest. A local road connects it to neighbouring Crni Lug. Around it rise some of the region's best-known mountains: Šator with its glacial lake, the long ridge of Dinara, and the wide karst fields of Grahovsko and Livanjsko polje stretching below.

For most of its history Bastasi was a Serb farming and herding village. Families kept livestock, cut timber and worked the land the same way their grandparents had.
The village took the same blow as the whole Grahovo region. In 1995 the war emptied the municipality, and most of its buildings were destroyed. Many people never came back. The 2013 census counted 20 residents in Bastasi, all of them Serbs. Behind that number are the people who stayed or returned. Even more are scattered across Serbia, Republika Srpska and the wider world, still calling Bastasi home.
This page is for them. It's for anyone who was born here, whose parents or grandparents came from here, or who simply wants to know the place. Here we collect photographs, family stories, old names of fields and springs, and news of gatherings and visits. We want the memory of Bastasi kept alive and passed on.
If you have an old photo, a story, or a name worth remembering, please send it to us. Every piece helps fill in the picture of the village.
